A Lautoka bus operator is urging members of the public to use their e-ticketing cards instead of giving cash when boarding buses to avoid body contact because of the highly contagious strain of COVID-19 that is in the country.
Classic Buses Ltd director operations Adnan Mohammed said with more cases of COVID-19 being announced, it was important there is minimal contact between passengers and drivers.
“There has been a huge increase in the number of passengers paying cash to drivers instead of using their e-ticketing cards,” he said.
“These cash payments are going in the pockets of the drivers and not the bus operator that is providing service to the public.
“There have also been instances where drivers have refused to take cash and this has been posted on social media, shaming bus operators for not being sympathetic to the situation.”
Mr Mohammed said as a service provider, they were doing their part by providing a service to the public and informing drivers to adhere to the rules by not taking cash.
“We are requesting the public to follow the rules and take precautionary measures while they are out. Wear your masks, keep your distance and stay safe. Do not travel if you don’t need to.”
