US: ISIL beyond anything we’ve seen

WASHINGTON – The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant poses a greater danger than conventional terrorists and is pursuing a vision that could radically alter the face of the Middle East, US defence leaders say.

The jihadist group, also known as ISIS or Islamic State, could eventually be defeated by local forces with help but the Sunni population in both Syria and Iraq would need to reject it, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and General Martin Dempsey told reporters on Thursday.

Mr Hagel warned that ISIL was better armed, trained and funded than any recent militant threat.

“They marry ideology and a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well funded. This is beyond anything we have seen,” Mr Hagel told a news conference.
