Upgrades for two hospitals

THE Kadavu and Taveuni hospitals will undergo some upgrade as part of the Australian Government’s $15.4 million assistance to the Fiji Government tropical cyclone rehabilitation project.

Speaking at the signing of the funding assistance in Suva yesterday, Australian High Commission chargé d’affaires John Williams said the Australian Government agreed to do some infrastructure development at the two hospitals.

When asked if the Australian Government had plans to assist Fiji in the upgrade of other medical facilities, Mr Williams said that’s an issue they would discuss with the Fiji Government.

“So I think to best answer that question, it would be something we have to discuss with the Government of Fiji, in terms of the government priorities and where we direct our support,” he said.

Mr Williams said the Australian Government had ongoing health works with the Fijian Government.

“We do broader aid program here in Fiji $A40 million ($F59.2 million) and another $A40 million in regional and global funding for Fiji.

“Obliviously we work closely with the Government of Fiji on where we prioritise that, including ongoing health work.”

The Australian Government has contributed a total of $F44m towards the cyclone rehabilitation project in Fiji.
