SLIGHTLY more than half of all legal problems in Fiji remain unresolved, according to the executive summary of the report Justice Needs and Satisfaction in Fiji that was released on Friday.

“Only one in three is seen as completely resolved,” the report stated.

“People believe that rich people are more likely to receive justice than poorer individuals.”

The report stated that the percentage meant that every year around 67,000 users of justice system actively pursue dispute resolution while 33,000 do not undertake steps to solve their problems.

“The most cited reason for such passive behavior are related to the fact that the problem was simply abandoned, lack of belief that the problem can be resolved in a beneficial manner and not knowing want to do,” the report stated.

Barriers to justice are both cognitive and objective.

Meanwhile, more than 4910 respondents from all the four divisions in Fiji were interviewed in this survey.
