Being an internationally-recognised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) focused institute will remain at the strategic forefront of the Fiji National University (FNU).

This, according to FNU acting vice-chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebrations of FNU’s partnership with Technical and Further Education New South Wales (TAFE NSW) in Suva on Friday, Prof Nabobo-Baba said a key differentiating feature of TAFE New South Wales programs in Fiji was their ability to provide those in employment a chance to upskill their existing work skills.

She said with support from the industry, FNU catered for lower student numbers in Levuka, Taveuni, Rakiraki, Sigatoka, Tavua, and Deuba through remote satellite centres.

This also afforded FNU the flexibility to run internationally-recognised qualifications by TAFE NSW for Fijian students.

Among those programs is the advanced diploma of leadership management aimed at those in the workforce.

“These are usually mature-aged students working in clerical and supervisory positions in retail, tourism, and other industries, including the public sector,” she said.

“While working, the students can complete their program and gain academic recognition that open doors of opportunity in terms of work promotions, as well as further education in undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

“After serving three years in a supervisory and managerial role post-graduation, these students can enter the university’s Master of Business Administration program.”

She said in pursuit of this objective, and in alignment with FNU’s 2021-2026 strategic plan, the university would continue to live their mission as a dual-sector university, promoting excellence in TVET and higher education.
