The Vodafone Arena in Suva was a sea of colours, joy and celebration as the University of the South Pacific held its first graduation for 2023 on Thursday.

The Laucala Campus graduation culminated over two days and four sessions with a total of 1786 students graduating with certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

The first session was for students from the school of Business and Management (SBM) and School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP).

This was followed by the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE); School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Oceans & Natural Sciences (SAGEONS) and Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) in the afternoon.

Yesterday, the morning session was for students from the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE) and School of Law and Social Sciences (SoLaSS), followed by their peers from Pacific Technical and Further Education (PTAFE) in the afternoon.

USP vice chancellor Professor Pal Alluwalia said the most remarkable statistic was approximately 61 per cent of the graduates were females.

He said another achievement for the university was that the graduates were from 22 different countries, 10 of whom are from non-member countries.

“What a great statistic, it is a great testament to the quality intrinsic among the people of the Pacific,” he said.

The VC reminded the graduates to reflect on the values that had brought them this far and those that would guide them forward.

“I also want you to think of the many people who have shaped those values and have contributed to your success so far, your parents, siblings, grandparents, spouses, partners, aunties, uncles, cousins, kindergarten, primary and high school teachers, tutors and lecturers – these are all members of your proverbial village.”

The VC highlighted that USP had and continued to be a bedrock for regionalism, a resource owned by the region; for the region and a precious institution that needs to be protected in line with the vision of our forbearers.

He said the staff and students were just as proud of the many alumni now leaders in the international and private sectors who continued to make an immensely invaluable contribution to the development of those countries and the region.
