Lomaiviti Provincial Council chairman Ratu Etueni Caucau has suggested the establishment of an indigenous Fijian university.

Mr Caucau made the suggestion at a GCC review consultation in Levuka on Wednesday.

“We have Ratu Sukuna Memorial School, an institution that belongs to the Great Council of Chiefs,” he said.

“We have Draiba Fijian Primary School, Ratu Kadavulevu School, Queen Victoria School and Adi Cakobau School, all these are Fijian institutions.

“Why don’t we have a university? A Fijian indigenous university that can look after and protect our culture. It can be a guardian of our culture, language, our artifacts and everything that concerns our cultural identity.”

Mr Caucau said Fiji could link up with indigenous counterparts in Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia.

GCC review team leader Dr Jone Baledrokadroka said proposals from the review meetings would be compiled in a report and given to the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, GCC and Cabinet.
