THE two teacher unions have commended the Ministry of Education on its move to seek expression of interests from existing teachers to act as Head of Departments (HOD’s) for secondary schools.
This expression of interest was sent out by the Education Ministry permanent secretary Alison Burchell.
The expression of interest stated those who apply would fill all vacant positions that are not currently occupied by an acting HOD.
It also stated that the teachers who take up the acting HOD’s posts may act on the position until the end of this year’s academic year.
“The acting period will be ended on the date a substantive appointment is made through the open merit recruitment selection process, redeployment/transfer of a substantive post holder or the date the acting appointment is revoked, whichever is earlier,” the circular stated.
Fiji Teacher’s Union (FTU) general secretary Agni Deo Singh said the union was happy with the ministry’s move and that was to appoint teachers to act on higher positions and from within their district.
Fijian Teacher’s Association (FTA) general secretary Paula Manumanunitoga echoed similar sentiments and said a recommendations made by school principals could also be taken into account.
