The National Farmers Union (NFU) has asked Government to make the guaranteed $85 per tonne of cane payment to farmers.

This, after an announcement yesterday that $7.62 per tonne would be paid on Friday, bringing the 2019 payment total to $82.21.

“This is $2.79 short of the guaranteed price of $85 per tonne,” said NFU secretary general Mahendra Chaudhry.

He said Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama had told growers in Nadi recently a full payment of $85 would be made.

“If you can’t keep a promise, don’t make it,” said Mr Chaudhry.

“We now call on him to deliver on his promise.”
