The University of the South Pacific has purchased and trucked around 40,000 litres of water a day over the past week to address the water issues that students and staff members are continuously facing.

In response to queries from this newspaper, USP said on Sunday alone the university trucked in more than 60,000 litres of water.

“We would have brought in close to 120,000 litres over the last weekend,” USP said.

“The university is aware of and is actively addressing water availability issues at USP’s Laucala Campus due to low pressure and operational matters from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) which are beyond USP’s control.

“USP has invested significantly in back-up water storage across the Laucala Campus over the years for staff and students residing on campus. USP’s backup water facilities provide limited backup capacity, which is being exceeded in recent times given the extended duration of the WAF outages, now spanning weeks.”

USP said students had also been advised of alternative locations for water.

“The university’s Estates and Infrastructure Commercial and Halls and Campus Life staff have been working relentlessly to support students and staff through this challenging water crisis faced by most central areas in Fiji. The disruptions are regrettable, and we hope WAF is able to resolve the water disruption issues at the earliest.”
