‘Understand disabilities’

PEOPLE with disabilities have different needs and these should be taken into account by those offering assistance of any kind.

Fiji Disabled People’s Federation representative Sainimili Naivalu said people with disabilities appreciated the help received and encouraged organisations and groups to understand the various types of disabilities.

“For those of us with the various forms of disabilities, we have different and specific needs so when we get help we appreciate the thought and time and resources put into the project or act,” Ms Naivalu said.

“We always encourage those offering their assistance to first understand and educate themselves on our needs so that we benefit the best from their funding and assistance.

“In terms of inclusivity, we can see how Fiji is progressing and working towards that goal where everyone gets the same treatment and services.”

Ms Naivalu said being part of workshops and consultations that involved relevant stakeholders ensured that all parties were educated and aware of people with disabilities.

“For me, the top three concerns for us would be accessibility, medical supplies and security, to ensure that we are assisted at all times, even during and after natural disasters, and not called to as an afterthought.”
