FIJI’S Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has raised concerns over the manner in which people underestimate the challenges of climate change.

He highlighted this issue while speaking at a climate event meeting at the UN headquarters in New York this week.

Mr Bainimarama said people had started to enter a frightening era where occurrences of natural disasters had rapidly increased because of the changing climatic conditions.

“I fear that far too many still underestimate the peril we are in due to global warming,” the Fijian PM said.

“We underestimate, in part, because it’s too uncomfortable or politically inconvenient to acknowledge the nature and scale of the risk.

“We have the ability to change our energy systems, to draw down carbon into our forests, mangroves and soils and to make more efficient use of our resources. But it’s up to us to make sure we don’t fall short of our potential.”
