Uncle imprisoned for 13 years for raping niece

Update: 4:00PM A MAN who convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl in 2015 in Lautoka was sentenced today by the High Court in Lautoka to more than 13 years imprisonment.

While passing sentence High Court judge Justice Sunil Sharma told the
father of one that he had breached the trust the victim had towards him as her
paternal uncle.

“You should be ashamed of yourself. You have shattered the dreams of
this enterprising young child and no amount of repentance will bring back what
she has lost,” he said.

Justice Sharma said the incident had affected the victim psychologically
as she could not concentrate on her school work.

“It is the duty of the court to protect children from sexual
exploitation of any kind that is the reason why law has imposed life
imprisonment as the maximum penalty,” Justice Sharma said.

The final sentence was 13 years and nine months of
which 10 years are to be spent in prison before he is eligible for parole.
