UNITED Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment David Boyd visited Vunidogoloa Village in Cakaudrove during his visit in the country.

Vunidogoloa Village was relocated inland in 2014 because seawater was inundating homes and crops in their idyllic ocean-side location.

According to Mr Boyd, although the relocation process was deeply painful for the villagers, the new village site offered improved housing conditions, better sanitation, improved access to health care and education.

“They also have solar-powered electricity for each home although currently limited to a few lights,” Mr Boyd said.

“The new site was selected by the community and subjected to an environmental impact assessment.”

He said several other villages had already been moved with several in progress and there were at least forty additional communities awaiting relocation.

“Fiji has developed Planned Relocation Guidelines to ensure that the rights and dignity of persons involved are respected,” he said.

He added relocation was appropriately viewed as a last resort and was only contemplated at the request of an affected village and after an extended collaborative process.
