Umu leads team to victory in snooker event

FORMER national champion Viliame Umu led his Quick Cash Gold team to become the new champion of the Charity Snooker title yesterday.
Quick Cash Gold, which also had the services of Francis Ram and Ken Lord, defeated Prasad’s Family 2-1 in the final of the three-player team tournament at Merchants Club in Suva.
Umu and his brigade took the early lead with a 77-62 win in the first frame.
Prasad’s Family clawed their way to draw the match 1-1 with 68-42 victory in the second frame.
Umu and Lord then combined to down Yogen Prasad and Mahendra Lal 79-1 in the deciding frame to go home $150 richer.
Prasad’s Family won $100 and a trophy for their efforts in the Southern Division Billiard and Snooker Association (SDBSA) organised tournament.
Earlier yesterday, defending champion Sam Super Pool and last year’s finalist Quick Cash Silver were bundled out in the quarter-final by The Prasad’s Family and Kaks Marketing I respectively.
Quick Cash Gold won the other quarter-final 2-1 over Kaks Marketing II while Ratnam Investments won by default over Carz and Carz in the last quarter-final.
In the semi-finals, Prasad’s Family beat Kaks Marketing I 2-0 while Quick Cash Gold won over Ratnam Investments by the same score.
SDBSA president Riffat Bhatti said the aim of the tournament was to raise funds to be donated to the Senior Citizen’s Home in Samabula.
Other items donated would be given to the Salvation Army for distribution.
“We managed to raise over $1000 over the two-day tournament and for a minor sport, that is a huge amount,” he said.
“We are discussing with the manager of the Senior Citizen’s Home to find out what the diet of the occupants of the Home is so that we can take over food those them.”
