THE current typhoid outbreak in Fiji has been contained.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

Earlier this month, a typhoid outbreak was reported in Naitasiri, 31 confirmed and 14 suspected cases in young Fijians and those between the ages of 30-40 years.

Dr Waqainabete said the outbreak in Naitasiri was waterborne as villagers resorted to drinking from the river during the prolonged dry spell.

He said in light of the current weather situation one of the major concerns for a natural disaster was a disease outbreak.

“As you know we are just beginning to curtail the typhoid outbreak that we just had so with these disaster we are looking at at the moment so theirs issues around water and sanitation,” he said.

He said however the Ministry was fully prepared should a natural disaster hit Fiji in the coming days.
