A person will face two years in jail or a fine of $10,000 and a company will be fined $100,000 if they breach a barrier that has been set up by police.
This is stated in the draft Police Bill 2020 that is now open for public submissions. These barriers can be placed in the internal waters of Fiji, the archipelagic waters of Fiji, the territorial seas of Fiji, the contiguous zone and the exclusive economic zone of Fiji, any river, stream, lake, pond, creek, pool, dam, swamp, drain or any type of body of water.
“Any police officer or special constable may take all such reasonable steps as he or she considers necessary to prevent any person either by himself or herself or by any other means whatsoever from passing or entering any barrier erected or placed under the provisions of subsection.
“Any such person who fails to comply with any reasonable signal made or direction given by a police officer or special constable under the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of an offence and is liable upon conviction.”
