NIPPY Jerry Tuwai and Waisea Naqucu impressed Fiji Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber in their first match of the Oceania 7s at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.
Baber said he was closely monitoring the players for the Dubai 7s which will be played at the end of the year.
Fiji defeated New Caledonia 35-0 with two tries to Tuwai and Naqucu while Paula Dranisinukula scored his first try in the tournament.
“Wise and Jerry really stood out in the match and especially with the way Naqucu changes his place on the field,” Baber said.
“Jerry was good as well to beat the people and he had a good accuracy.
“I have to make my assessment as we progress through the pool stages to the knockout stages. I want to see the players playing under pressure in the semi-final and the final.”
Baber was happy with the runs by Uluiyata Batinisavu.
“It was good we scored five tries in the match, but it was bit scrappy in the second half,” he said.
“We also had six or seven knock-ons and it killed the game.”
