The tsunami advisory issued for all coastal areas and maritime islands in Fiji has been cancelled.

The Mineral Resources Department (MRD) said tsunami wave heights on local tide gauges were below advisory level and had normalised.

Members of the public are still advised to be on standby and stay alert.

An underwater volcano off Tonga had erupted on Saturday afternoon, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuation orders in Fiji and several other South Pacific islands.

Several footages were circulated on social media showing tidal waves crashing into homes of coastal and maritime villages.
