A cyclone alert has been issued for Fiji’s Rotuma islands, as a tropical depression continues to intensify.

Fiji’s meteorological service said the tropical disturbance was expected to have intensified into a category one cyclone by the time it reached Rotuma tomorrow evening.

Winds would strengthen from today, reaching gale force tomorrow.

Heavy rain and coastal flooding could also be expected.

The storm is likely to then head towards one of Fiji’s larger islands, Vanua Levu, this weekend.
