Tribute to fallen indentured labourers

VILLAGERS of Navilaca in Rewa and members of the Indian diaspora paid tributes to indentured labourers who died when the ship they were coming in from India to Fiji ran aground on Nasilai Reef in 1884.

They visited the site of the wreck last Saturday, with some even getting the opportunity to touch the remains of the ship. Event organiser Sashi Kiran said out of the 497 passengers who were on the ship,

the captain’s record showed the villagers rescued about 100 people on day one. Ms Kiran said 38 people were buried by the villagers while the record showed 54 people were unaccounted for.
