The founder of a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) for abused women and girls says it is sad women are abandoning their children because of the economic impact of COVID-19.

The Rev Sereima Lomaloma of the Anglican Church NGO House of Sarah made the comment in response to a recent revelation from the Lami District Council of Social Services that mothers were leaving their families.

“If this is what is happening during this pandemic, it is really very sad,” she said.

“It is sad to see that people are abandoning their homes at a time when they should be stronger than ever.”

Ms Lomaloma said it was the responsibility of parents to ensure children and family were safe.

“You have a responsibility to look after your family and you never abandon your family during this difficult time.”
