‘Trash by roads for months’

The Nasinu Town Council has not collected green waste for more than three months in Navosai, claim residents in the area.

One of the residents, Josese Ketebaca, claimed the issue has led to multiple heaps littering the roads in Navosai.

“The green waste in this area is never collected, that is why there are piles of rubbish alongside this road,” he said.

“I had no choice and had to burn a heap of green waste beside my house.

“The rubbish in front of the Tiko Pl signboard has been there for more than three months.

“They regularly pick up our garbage, but not our green waste. “It is not only an eyesore, we feel it is unfair because we pay town rates while they’re not doing their job.”

He also claimed drains in the area were not being cleaned by the council.

“They do not clean our drains. Ever since I moved here in 2001, the council has never cleared the drain beside my house. I’m the one who cleans it.

“On the other side of the road where they cleaned the drain, they just pile the trash they fish out on to the side of the road. Pumpkins and grass are now growing on it. It’s been there for nearly eight months.”

Mr Ketebaca, a former deacon for the Navosai Methodist Church, claimed he made multiple complaints to the council about the pile of trash in front of church building, but no action was taken.

“People have been dumping rubbish in front of our church for years. We’ve asked these people to stop dumping their rubbish, but to no avail.

“I’ve complained to the town council three times last year, but nothing has been done.

“I also flagged down a council vehicle and requested their assistance but nothing has been done until today.”

Mr Ketebaca claimed the trash mound caused the septic tank below it to leak and that was a serious health issue.

“People are still dumping their rubbish. Our septic tank was damaged because of the trash that’s accumulated. It was leaking and the unbearable smell comes right into the church building.

“This was one of the many reasons I complained because the rubbish has damaged an electrical pole.

“But there has been no response despite raising all these issues.”

Another resident of Tiko Pl, Navosai, who speak on the condition of anonymity also shared similar concerns about the trash not being collected.

“We need this issue to be addressed and for the collection schedule to be followed,” he said.

“Our green waste in this neighbourhood is not collected regularly. I don’t know how their schedule works.

“The pick up is usually after one or two moths, but the heap on the side of our road has not been collected in a long time.

“We want the green waste to be picked up on a regular basis.”

Balolo St and Narere Rd residents also said green waste in their neighbourhood had not been collected for more than two months.

The Local Government Ministry said it would respond to the concerns yesterday but nothing has been received so far.

Earlier this week, the Nasinu Town Council said illegal and indiscriminate dumping of waste continued to be a major concern.
