Training institutes’ improvement

THE standard of teacher training institutions needs improvement, says the Education Ministry’s deputy secretary professional Kelera Taloga.
She made the comments at the opening of the first National Education Seminar at the Holiday Inn in Suva last Thursday.
The two-day seminar was attended by stakeholders from all teacher institutions, including the three national universities and teacher training institutions.
“We are now in the 21st century and we have students who are technology savvy and some of the teachers are not ready to be able to handle these things,” Ms Taloga said.
“We have exchange of information through lots of mediums.
“A lot of our students are very knowledgeable and these are the things that the teacher has to know about and also manage.
“In that way we are questioning the standard of the teachers — how ready and competent are they to be able to teach children of the 21st century.”
She said the needs of students were different from what it was 20 years ago.
