INTERNATIONAL and domestic trafficking in Fiji has now extended to Thailand and other countries, according to International Organization for Migration project support officer Lee Yacoumis.
Ms Yacoumis, during her presentation during the Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation workshop at the Naviti Resort in Sigatoka yesterday, said trafficking was increasing in Fiji.
She said previously sex trafficking was only from China.
“Previously for example victims for sex trafficking in Fiji previously were only from China and Philippines, but now it has extended to Thailand and other countries,” she said.
“It appears that trafficking is increasing in Fiji, but that is not shared effectively and we do know that the numbers are still low.”
Ms Yacoumis said Fiji was developing a stronger inspection program to ensure employers were doing the right thing for migrant workers.
