Foreign luxury yachts are expected to arrive in Savusavu in three weeks’ time under the Blue Lane initiative.
Although the numbers arriving are unknown, stakeholders are looking forward to welcoming the initiative.
Savusavu Town Council administrator Doreen Robinson said the commitment and hard work of tourism stakeholders had paid off.
“This is good news for Savusavu and this achievement is the result of our quiet and hard work behind the scene,” she said.
“The council has also worked with the private sector to help with costs of housing and feeding the six military officers who will be stationed in town for this purpose.”
Ms Robinson said under the scheme, yachts could sail directly to the Hidden Paradise and be quarantined in a defined area under the supervision of a special taskforce.
“It’s important for the villagers to know that while a yacht is in quarantine, they should not take their boats out to visit it.
“And we’ve reassured them that no one is allowed off the yacht until they have cleared all our health checks and tested negative for COVID-19.”
The COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Taskforce (CRMT) approved Savusavu as a designated quarantine anchorage under the Blue Lane initiative of the Fijian COVID Safe Economic Recovery Framework.
