ATHLETICS Fiji will have a hard task ahead in selecting the final athletes for the Melanesian Games after their final trials at the ANZ Stadium last weekend.
Chief development officer Joseph Rodan (Jr) said there was a good turnout at the trials with most of the athletes competing to make best times and distances for the regional event.
“The turnout was impressive, considering it as a short program,” he said.
“It’s the last trials. It would be interesting to see the times. In the Melanesian Games, the competition will happen around the same time so that’s why the trials are in the evening to get people used to competing at this type of time.”
Rodan Jr said the list of names of athletes in squad A and B would be released next week.
“By next week we can put the names of the members of the team out. Fiji A, Fiji B, under-18 A and Masters and Paralympic teams,” he said.
Most of the athletes in the trials were gold medallists from the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Fiji finals.
