Tough schedule for Baber’s men
27 February, 2018, 12:00 am
ONLY four from the 16 teams participating at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) men’s 7s tournament will remain in the hunt for a medal upon completion of the pool games.
World Rugby has released the schedule and format of the event.
Unlike past years, the quarter-finals, this time, has been removed which means that the four pool winners will qualify for the semi-finals with the pool runner-ups in each pool moving to the placings match while the remaining two eliminated from the competition.
This is set to make the path for the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team a bit tougher in a bid to win its first gold medal at the CWG. Fiji is in Pool D with Wales, Uganda and Sri Lanka.
The above is set to transform Pool B into a pool of death as out of the three, England, Australia and Samoa, two of the top sides are set to be eliminated.
The men’s competition will be played on April 14 and 15 at Robina Stadium in Australia.
Fiji will play Sri Lanka in its opening match followed by Uganda and Wales on April 14. The semi-finals and final will be held on April 15.
In the women’s competition the winners and runner-ups of the two pools will feature in the semi-finals while the others relegated to the placings match.
Fiji Airways Fijiana side is in Pool B with Australia, England and Wales.
This is the first time for the women’s 7s competition to be part of the CWGs. Fijiana will be in action on April 13 when it faces England and Wales. On April 14 the team will battle host Australia.
The women’s semi-finals will be held on April 15.
