Tough going for Fiji lifter

KADAVU lass Merewalesi Vusonitokalau was content with her lift in the women’s 81kg last night in the 2019 IWF Junior World Championships at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

The 20-year-old Suva Grammar School student was in tears when she failed to lift 80kg twice in the clean and jerk category.

But in her third attempt she managed to have a good lift.

“I was really nervous and I lost all hope when I failed my two attempts,” Vusonitokalau said.

“But something kept pushing me telling me that it was OK. It was tough go against some of the best junior lifter in the world.”

She had a tough competition from Nauru lifter Agir Jolay and Samoa Sive Kolotita.

Vusonitokalau had a good lift in the 60kg but unfortunately there was a no lift in the 65kg where she managed to lift it in her third attempt.

“This is not the end of the road for me, I will keep on lifting and hopefully represent my country in any international competition.

“I want to be successful in this sport and make a name for myself. I know I can do this.”

The championships continue today.
