Tough conditions for cyclists in Tour of Fiji

THE Fiji cycling Tour of Fiji had a successful ride along the Kings Rd starting from Korovou and yesterday stopped in Sigatoka.

The first day saw the cyclists ride from Korovou in Tailevu to the Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel on Saturday.

Cycling Fiji president Peter Sinclair said one of the hiccups they faced was the dry conditions that they went through which affected some of the riders.

“The race started at 8am on Saturday morning and the cyclist stuck together in the beginning and when we went up towards the hill the group started to separate and it was tough as it was beginning to get hot towards the end of the race,” he said.

“We had a bit of a headwind that slowed things down at about 60 kilometres of the race and the last 10km the direction changed and it began to push us up so the riders began to cycle fast.

“There were no accidents in regards to road wind safety and we thanked Fulton Hogans Hiway for supporting and directing the riders to a safer zone.

“It was a good first day and now we’re looking forward to our second day,” he said.

The second day saw the cyclists ride another 100km from the Tanoa Rakiraki Hotel to Lautoka.

Sinclair said the third day will see the cyclists take part in a time trial along the Sigatoka Valley Rd.

“The individual times for each participant from each stage will be totalled to determine the overall winner of the tour,” he said.

“The event requires a team of supporters to ensure that cyclists complete the challenging course safely and in the most competitive time possible.”
