Top teams to battle in Nawaka 7s

THE organisers of the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s have been forced to turn away several teams after receiving overwhelming response for participation at the two-day event.

The 28th edition of the Nawaka 7s gets underway at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this Friday with a total of 64 teams.

Police National will defend the title. The side defeated Yamacia Red 24-21 in the cup final last year.

Top clubs including Tokatoka Westfield Dragons, Tabadamu, Red Rock, Army Red, Army Green, Hideaway Hurricanes and Wardens will also be gunning for the cup winner’s purse of $10,000.

Paradise Beverages will officially hand over the sponsorship cheque to the organisers of the tournament at Nawaka Village this afternoon.

Nawaka Rugby Club president Mataiasi Nabau said there was big hype surrounding the tournament.

Nabau said this was because of the excellent performance of the Vodafone Fiji 7s team at the Hong Kong 7s.

“We have shifted the dates to allow the national selectors to scout for new talents ahead of the assault at the final leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series,” he said.

“Our club is proud to be part of Fiji Rugby Union’s quest to win the first ever Olympic gold medal in Rio next year.

“National coach Ben Ryan stated that he would be at Prince Charles Park to watch the games.

“I believe this is a motivational factor that will drive the players to performance above expectations.

“Players can still force their way into the national squad so we anticipate high level of 7s action.

“A few teams had to be turned away because we reached the final number of 64 before the deadline last Friday.

“However these teams are on standby in case of late withdrawals.”

The managers of all teams are requested to attend a meeting at the Nawaka Community Hall at 7pm tomorrow.
