Top fours team

AUSTRALIAN bowlers Steve Rice and Graeme Kath teamed up with local-based Rick Eyre and Lema Matailevu to take out the 9th Fiji Airways Sunny West Bowling Carnival 2016 Fours event held at the Nadi Sports Club.

They edged the opposing team of Jan Oregan, Cameron Laird, Stephen Oregan and Troy Stafford in the final on Sunday.

Raymond Singh, Iliaz Khan, Bobby Prasad and Abdul Khalim also teamed-up to win the plate beating Jona Koroitamana, Eseroma Taubale, Waisea Turaga and Phil Taylor.

Tournament official Bobby Prasad said the competition was tough and congratulated the winners for their achievements. He said a field of 96 bowlers participated at the event.

“We had 50 international bowlers who battled against the 46 locals during the Fours event and the competition was tough,” said Prasad.

“The presence of the overseas bowlers also lifted the standard of competition at the same time enabled the locals to gauge their standard. It was encouraging to see some overseas bowlers teaming up with the locals during the event.”

Prasad said club hosted the Pairs event yesterday with the finals tomorrow. He also acknowledged the junior bowlers who participated in the Junior event on Saturday.

“The main feature for this year’s event is the junior competition, this is mainly done to promote the sport and the grass roots level and we are so grateful with the interests shown.”

Prasad also thanked the major sponsor Fiji Airways and organisations such as Fiji Gas, Smuggler’s Cove and Tanoa Hotel for their sponsorship. The tournament continues today.
