Top 14 Rawaca lands La Rochelle contract

FIJIAN flyer Savenaca Rawaca has been offered lucrative contract with the La Rochelle rugby club in the France Top 14 competition.

The Olympics gold medallist will team up with fellow countrymen Kini Murimurivalu and Lepani Botia for his new club.

France Embassy public relation adviser Moira Vilisoni confirmed the robust winger had lodged his visa yesterday.

She said Rawaca also brought his gold medal to the office and had his pictures taken with officers at the embassy.

Vilisoni said Rawaca would love his new home because the environment was a bit similar to Fiji.

“Rawaca came this morning to lodge his visa and he will be joining La Rochelle rugby club,” she said.

“He will first go and try out his new team if he fits in well. But at the office this morning he was quite confident and we know he will like his new home.

“He has been offered lucrative contract and will join other Fijian boys such as Kini Murimurivalu and Lepani Botia.

“The other Fijian boys that played for the club was the late Fijian international Seru Rabeni and former national rep Norman Ligairi.”

Vilisoni said La Rochelle was one of the top clubs in France.

It is believed that La Rochelle had offered Rawaca a better rugby deal which caused Rawaca to turn down the Saracens rugby deal.

Dubbed as the “Beast” in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Rawaca made his debut for the Fiji 7s team at the 2014 Gold Coast 7s.

Since then he has been a crucial member of the then Ben Ryan-coached Fiji 7s team that won the series title for two consecutive years and created history with the gold medal win at the Rio Games.

The 25-year-old was also a member of the champion BLK Nadroga that scooped the HFC Farebrother Sullivan trophy and the Skipper Cup in 2014.
