Tonga undertakes major maritime rescue exercise

Listen to this article:

Tonga has this week carried out its first-ever maritime search and rescue exercise, involving all the relevant agencies.

It was done in the waters to the north of Nuku’alofa with a multi-agency response to the sinking of the inter-island ferry.

It tested the interoperability of command, control and communication as well as logistical support.

The Police Search and Rescue National Commander, deputy commissioner Atunaisa Taumoepeau, said Tonga faces unique challenges when it comes to maritime search and rescue especially with the way their islands are spread out over so much ocean.
