Two women in Senate

Two women have made the final list of the 24 senators nominated by the Bose Levu Vakaturga.

They are Minister for Women and Social welfare, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro, and the late Vunivalu’s daughter, Adi Litia Cakobua.

Both alongside Ratu Tu’uakitau Cokanauto, will represent Tailevu. All three are from the chiefly island of Bau.

Other senators nominated are Ratu Filimoni Ralogaivau, OBE, and Ratu Josefa Iloilo, MBE.

Fiji battered again

The Fiji national rugby team took another battering when New Zealand’s second division provincial side Taranaki dished out a 54-6 drubbing at Rugby Park, New Plymouth yesterday.

The team never seems to have recovered from the humiliation lashed out by the Waratahs on Sunday at the Sydney Conoord Oval with an equally dismal 52-6 scoreline.

Yesterday it was more pathetic not by the continued deteriorating performance of the Fiji team.

Lawman in vote meddling probe

A police officer is being investigated for allegedly interfering during voting at Navua yesterday.

National Federation Party candidate Maan Singh said some of his illiterate supporters had complained that an officer had tampered with their ballot papers.

Navua police post station officer Ilikimi Torosi said he had received a complaint from Mr Singh about some police officers. He confirmed that the officer would be questioned.

Mr Singh called for more vigilant scrutiny by the Elections Office over such incidents “for the sake of a fair and unbiased election”.

Killing in village

A farmer is dead after what police believe was a brawl in a village on Saturday.

Police are investigating the death of Joeli Vulalailai, 53, of Lomanikoro, Rewa, who was found by villagers on Saturday night with facial injuries. Divisional Crime Officer Eastern Keshri Lal said Vulalailai had been drinking home brew with fellow villagers who had been taking part in a fundraising festival.

“There was some blood on his face but the cause of death should be determined after a post-mortem examination” Keshri Lal, Assistant Superintendent said.

ASP Lal said it had been determined so far that the man had been drinking home brew at another site from where he was discovered by fellow villagers.

Speak out, Buadromo urges

The minds of young people, especially women in Fiji, need to be changed so they are encouraged to speak out and make their voices heard, a new women’s program advocates.

That is the motto of the new program the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement is focusing on.

The comments were made by FWRM executive director Virisila Buadromo.
