Diplomatic relations

THE Government of India says progress in Fiji’s Constitutional amendment takes precedence over any developmen in relations between the two countries. New Delhi was responding to a presidential statement at the opening of Parliament this week that Government would resume full diplomatic relations with India.

Quota fraud

CONCERNS surfaced once again over Fiji being used by Asian garment manufacturers in a quota fraud against the US. A shipment supposedly from a Suva garment factory was confiscated by the US Customs in the previous year on suspicions that it had violated US rules of origin clause. Worse still when US Customs began investigating tthe exporters furnished letters purpotedly signed by Fiji’s trade minister Harold Powell acknowledging the shipment thereby giving it official authorisation.

Rabuka joins war games

FORMER Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and his deputy, Filipe Bole, flew to Nadi International Airport on the evening of March 25 to take part in a mock anti-terrorist operation. The operation, codenamed Sikabotea II, involved a mock hijack of Air Pacific. “What is happening on Flight FJ575 is a mock illustration of my point that terrorists are made not born,” he said.

Rabuka accepts Namosi MP apology

NAMOSI parliamentarian Dr Ratu Ifereimi Buaserau apologised to the Soqosoqo Vakavulewa ni Taukei parliamentary caucus for his outbursts in the media against former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

In a recent media outburst, Dr Buaserau had called on Mr Rabuka to resign saying the Prime Minister was “off track in promoting the interests of indigenous Fijians”.

Gonelevu agrees to back Rabuka

PRIMARY Industry Minister, Viliame Gonelevu bowed to chiefly pressure and agreed to back Major General Sitiveni Rabuka’s bid for the post of Prime Minister.

The dramatic turnabout came as the Cakaudrove Provincial Council began the first day of its two-day meeting at the chiefly village of Somosomo on Taveuni.

Missing person

A FORMER senior Fiji police officer, living in Australia since soon after the 1987 coup has been reported missing from his home at Seaforth on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Police said Krishna Goundar had not been seen since leaving for his job in a factory at nearby Dee Why early on Friday, March, 20, 1992. Manly Police said investigators had learned the Immigration Department had denied Mr Gounder residential status.
