British American Tobacco Fiji has provided and distributed 150,000 vegetable seedlings in the 2021-2022 project seedlings season.

BAT Fiji general manager Damian Bruty said the initiative carried out with the Agriculture Ministry enhanced immediate food security and would allow for an alternative source of income to support economic recovery, while simultaneously driving the good practice of crop rotation among farmers.

The company distributed a further 2000 vegetable seedlings at its leaf growing division in Nadi last week, which was officiated by Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Bruty said BAT Fiji continued to recognise the role of businesses as corporate citizens, with duties that go beyond that of commercial growth and legal obligations.

“Additionally, biodiversity and afforestation are key focus areas to reduce the impacts of our business across our supply chain and these collectively support SDG 13, Climate Action,” Mr Bruty said.

“Reducing water consumption in our operations is also a key focus of the business.

“Some of the initiatives used to achieve this include identification and repair of leaks on-site, installation of sensor taps in facilities, training and awareness as well as process improvements across the business.”

Mr Bruty said as a business, they had embarked on rainwater harvesting activities at their Nabua factory, which had captured 100,000 litres of water in the past five months.
