We are trying to find how to deal with the drug problem at a national level, with the “national solution always failing”, says Minister for Home Affairs nd Immigration Pio Tikoduadua at a public consultation in Rakiraki yesterday.

He says Fiji has a “big problem about drugs”.

“We are looking at something national — but the national solution is always failing,” he said.

“Right now, I can tell you I am trying very hard to find something that can help us nationally.

“It cannot be like, take one tablet and your headache will go, we need to work in a process, and if it is community involvement.

“One thing about the community, this issue about drugs can create some very big issues for our communities.

“It is doing it now to children and if the children in your own village start engaging in this thing because they are idle, that will present a long-term problem for your community.

“You start your own groups to watch over the children, look out for those who want to sell.

“If you find these things, please work with the police. The idea is to discourage people from engaging in that activity here.”

Mr Tikoduadua held three consultations in Rakiraki yesterday, one in Waimari, the second in Dugavatu, and the third one in Ellington.
