Tietjens on Samoa revival

SAMOA coach Gordon Tietjens is the making Samoa 7s side competitive for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 7s Rugby World Cup next year.

Samoa registered two wins at the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“Our expectation is to do well in the tournament and players are playing for contracts and to get on the team for the Dubai and South Africa 7s in the HSBC World Sevens Series,” he said.

“We have an evenly balanced team which came back from Silicon Valley 7s and we have got one team which is competing in the Oceania 7s. We are playing just like it is a qualifying tournament and hopefully we will get better.”

Samoa had players such as Tulolo Tulolo, Tom Iosefo, captain Alatasi Tupou and Laaloi Leilua.

“It is a great challenge and headache to have a number of players to select a team from,” he said.

“Commonwealth Games and the world cup is a long way now and we are focusing on the team.”
