THE Fiji 7s team has arrived into the Commonwealth Games Village at Gold Coast, much to the excitement of Team Fiji, after winning the Hong Kong 7s last weekend.

The team jetted into Brisbane on Monday night after the historic triumph at So Kon Po.

Team Fiji deputy chef de mission Chris Yee said the arrival of the team and the gold medal win by weight-lifter Eileen Cikamatana on Monday had lifted the moral of our athletes.

“One of the main one everyone is looking forward to support is rugby 7s,” Yee said.

“We are so proud of what the rugby 7s men had done in Hong Kong. We are looking to them to do an excellent performance here. But we should note that every country has sent in their best players and everybody is banking on Fiji to win the gold medal. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will do very, very well. “

Fiji has never won a Commonwealth Games rugby 7s gold medal.

The team marched in with the Fijiana side which had been training in Brisbane last week.

The Iliesa Tanivula-coached side faces England on Friday at Robina Stadium at 7.15pm (Fiji time), and Wales at 9.55pm. They meet hosts Australia the following day at 9.21pm.

The Gareth Baber-coached side plays Sri Lanka first on Saturday in its pool matches at 1.21pm (Fiji time), 7.53pm against Uganda and 11.23pm against Wales.
