“THIS is for mom”, said Apete Ratulevu after he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in Suva yesterday.

The 24-year-old said hard work and perseverance paid off for him. Speaking about the challenges he had gone through, the Nakorokula villager from Ra, with tears said his mother was his pillar of strength.

“I couldn’t have done it without the teachings and support of my mother,” he said. “She was always there for me every time.”

Mr Ratulevu said being brought by his mother alone was a challenge itself.

“My dad passed away when I was still five years old and from that time it was my mother who has been sacrificing for both me and my sister.

“I am just thankful to everyone who has been part of my success and upbringing. I thank God for my mother. I am so overwhelmed.

Mr Ratulevu encouraged youths to always strive for excellence. “If I can do it, you can also do the same but you just have to work hard.

“Despite the lack of support from my relatives I still managed to achieve this,” he added.
