As if the heartache of watching their homes of many years being dismantled by contractors was not enough, residents of Veiraisi Settlement in Nadera, Nasinu now have to sleep among the piles of roofing iron and timber because of theft.

Eseta Rokoniu said her husband was sleeping in a makeshift tent next to their home just to keep watch over their building material.

“We have another problem with thieves who go around at night stealing our house material,” she said.

“For the past few nights my husband has been forced to erect a make shift tent with our house materials and sleep in it just so no one comes and steals our stuff.

“There are other households too who have had to do the same thing because people come at night and steal timber and other house material.”

Pastor Taufa Lote Lesikivanuabalavu said some of his church members were facing this issue.

“This is why some fathers have chosen to sleep outside with the dismantled house materials just so that they do not lose their house items,” he said.
