IN a bid to address the chronic drugs issue on Kadavu, village elders have suggested banishing those involved in the marijuana business.

However, the plan had to be shelved because of possible human rights implications.

Elders of Matasawalevu Village in the district of Nakasaleka had collectively agreed to ban those selling or cultivating marijuana from entering or residing in the village.

However, village headman Uraia Koroibiau said this has been challenge by certain agencies because it could infringe on the perpetrators’ rights.

Mr Koroibiau said the decision to banish perpetrators had been stalled because of this.

“In this village we have had only one villager taken into police custody so far this year,” he said.

“There are those that continue to challenge and disobey the rule of law and they are reminded during village meetings of the repercussions of their actions.”

Mr Koroibiau said villagers had been assisting police by providing information on those cultivating or selling marijuana.

Tui Buliya Ratu Viliame Tuni said villagers had been urged to report those involved in the illicit drug trade.

He said a recent police operation resulted in the discovery of marijuana in a cave along a rock cliff near Naqara.

“Our people are finally heeding the call to stop the cultivation and selling or consumption of marijuana. I believe the awareness programs need to increase so people are constantly reminded of their responsibility as law-abiding citizens.”
