Tuidraki Samusamuvodre skipped school and used to fib that his grandmother had passed away – just to train and play rugby.

Such was his obsession with the oval ball game.

Not even the stern words of his father, Mesake Samusamuvodre, that “no child in the family would become a rugby star” could deter him.

The towering 1.85m Namotomoto, Nadi, lad’s passion for the sport earned him a place in the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua rugby side, and with each passing game, he is showing selectors why he should be on the run-on side.

The former Naitasiri playmaker will start from the bench against the Crusaders at 7.05 this evening at the Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch.
