The Qarani Jetty

It is being deemed as the longest jetty in the country.

With length of about 250 metres, the Qarani jetty in Gau is one of the country’s latest up-to-date, standard man-made engineered structure.

In 2014 MWH Global Technical Delivery manager Don Clifford stated that during the designing and construction of the jetty, one of the challenges was the marine environment, thus they had to bring in an environment expert, geotechnical expertise and equipment.

Mr Clifford said good designs and building structures would help the jetty last longer and easy to repair

The jetty has the berthing capacity of 10,000-tonne vessels and can accommodate roll-on roll-off vessels.

The ships Lomaiviti Princess, Liahona and Uluinabukelevu provide services to and from the island of Gau.

The Qarani jetty is located in between Qarani Village and Navukailagi District School.

In the past the vessels would be anchored out at sea, small fibreglass boats would service villagers and their goods to land.

The other jetty on the island is located at Nawaikama.

The jetty was commissioned by the Prime Minister last year.
