LIFE is precious in this world and there is no justification to take someone’s life, says High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo.
Justice Temo, while passing judgment yesterday, sentenced a father of three to a mandatory life imprisonment for murdering his 29-year-old wife Shaleshni Lata in July 2015.
Hem Singh murdered his wife after an argument erupted between them at their pumpkin farm in Cuvu, Sigatoka.
Singh used a nokonoko tree branch to hit the top of his wife’s head.
Justice Temo said Singh’s assault was quite forceful and it appeared that the victim became weak. He said Singh then transported his wife’s body on horseback to Semo hill where he dumped the victim’s body.
While delivering his sentence, Justice Temo highlighted that Singh pretended to his children and his relatives that his wife was missing even though he was fully aware that he had killed her.
Justice Temo said Singh also gave false information to police when he was interviewed.
The 33-year-old murderer will serve a minimum term of 17 years behind bars before a pardon may be considered by the President.
He was convicted of one count of murder and one count of giving false information to a public servant.
