FIJI Airways 7s trainer Alekisa Kalougata said the national reps had been well conditioned and in the right shape for this weekend’s Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens tournament.
Alekisa, who replaced trainer and former coach, Nacani Cawanibuka, has been conditioning the players since their off-season training started in August in Fiji.
“Their body has improved,” Kalougata said.
“Together with Naca and the coach, we have been able to put together a training program that suited each player. The players have put in more muscles and this means it builds more strength and more power.”
He said the key components to their training programs was recovery.
“Recovery improves fitness and if we do not recover well, players can become fatigue and their performance can drop. So what we did is if we hit the gym for two days, we get a break for one day.”
While this may be his first official visit with the team as trainer, Kalougata was involved with the team last year as part of his attachment. The Ono, Lau native worked with Cawanibuka in the Fiji 7s team preparation to the Rio Olympic Games. He is a product of Brigham Young University after studying Exercise in Sport Science.
