Team Fiji returns

TEAM Fiji returns from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia today with a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.

The medallists are Eileen Cikamatana (gold) in weight-lifting, silver to the Fiji men’s 7s team, bronze medals to boxer Winston Hill and weight-lifter Apolonia Vaivai.

Chef de mission Patrick Bower commended the althletes saying Fiji performed above expectation.

“I am happy,” he said.

“We did well considering the results each sport achieved during the games.

“Even though we came with a big contingent, some sports performed very well and some needed to improve on their performance. We will go back and review our performance and see where we can improve to prepare well for the next games.”

Sports Minister Laisenia Tuitubou thanked Government for helping Team Fiji and also the athletes for standing up against some of the best countries in the Commonwealth.

“We did well against some of best Commonwealth countries,” he said.

“There are areas where we should improve on, but we have learned a lot from this games and we will return home and look at what we have collected here in order to prepare well and other international competitions.”

Tuitubou, who attended the Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting during the games, said Fiji and the Oceania proposed some measures to safeguard the region’s athletes. He said Government had placed its support on International Netball Federation’s approval for Fiji to host the 2021 World Youth Netball Cup in Fiji.

He said the upgrading of local sporting facilities would be looked at to host the tournament and other sporting internationals.
