EDUATION Minister Rosy Akbar has assured teachers that the ministry would look into their plight and address them accordingly.

She made the assurance while responding to a supplementary question by Opposition member of Parliament Ro Teimumu Kepa in Parliament yesterday.

Ms Akbar said she would not be able to resolve issues pertaining to teachers on an overnight basis, but she instead assured teachers that the ministry would look into their problems and look for solutions to resolve their issues, moving forward.

The Education Minister also told Parliament yesterday that teachers had every right to appeal any decision by the permanent secretary of the ministry to the Employment Relations Tribunal.

Every employee within the ministry has the right to appeal,” she said.

“It can go to the Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal and the employee with have an opportunity to be heard.

“This is an independent body. It’s made up of certain judges who decide objectively.”

She said in cases where teachers do not agree with their appointments and a promotion, a teacher has the right to go to the Public Service Commission where there was an independent commissioner. Teachers, she said, could not go to the PS of the ministry in regards to issues pertaining to appointments and promotions.

“In cases of disciplinary measures, the teachers also have the right to take the minister to court,” she said.
