TC Yasa: 6000 students to be assisted with stationery

Listen to this article:

The Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts this afternoon met with various stakeholders and private sector organisations who had shown interest in supporting students in the TC Yasa affected areas.

Thirty schools in the Northern Division have been severely damaged by TC Yasa affecting close to 4000 students within that community; Nadogo, Seaqaqa, Bua South, Bua North and Wailevu.

This assistance will be coordinated by the Ministry in partnership with the Fiji Teachers Union, Fiji Muslim League, Sathya Sai Service Organisation of Fiji, Yaadein Vision, SODELPA, Suva Forklift, TISI Sangam and UNICEF.

Minister Akbar says: “The interest we continue to receive despite the current economic situation is overwhelming and we are thankful to all organisations that have come forward in our support.”

On that note, we urge parents in Nadogo, Seaqaqa, Bua South, Maritime, Bua North and Wailevu clusters not to panic into buying school bags and stationery for their children this school year.

This assistance will continue for other areas as well when schools provide the Ministry with a needs analysis report.

In addition, over 1500 students in the Martine schools will also receive this assistance when they return for classes in this academic year. We urge all parents and communities to remain focused on the education of all children.

Organisations that wish to provide similar assistance are requested to contact the Ministry to avoid duplication of resources.

The Ministry is also grateful for the support rendered by DFAT and UNICEF.
